Igor Pogorelsky
Scientific Profile
Born in Moscow, USSR. Between 1968-1971, made a student research in Lebedev Physics Institute (Moscow) working in laboratory of Alexander Prokhorov, Nobel Price winner in lasers. Graduated with MS in Laser Physics from Institute of Physics and Technology (Moscow) in 1971. Subject of the MS diploma work was " Selection and Measurements of Single Pulses from Self-Mode-Locked Laser". During this study, demonstrated first autocorrelator measurements of single picosecond pulses.
Since 1971, worked in laboratory of another Nobelist in lasers, Nikolai Basov, still in Lebedev Physics Institute. Doing research in gas lasers with optical pumping, studied flash photolysis of molecular compounds by means of kinetic VUV spectroscopy. Used capillary discharges and expanding shock waves as the intense UV sources. Proposed and developed cryogenic eximer XeO laser optically pumped from shock wave produced by electrical wire explosion in gas. Delivering several joules of green light in a pulse, this laser became, for that time, the world most energetic visible eximer laser. "Development and Study of Eximer XeO Laser with Open-Discharge Optical Pumping" was the topic of thesis for Ph.D in Physics which was obtained from Lebedev Physics Institute in 1979.
In 1980-1988 - senior scientist at the Institute of Construction Materials (Moscow) developing high-power laser technology for material processing. Assembled a 10 kW CW CO2 laser for the industry applications. Author of several patents on laser technology, laser cleaning, etc.
After emigrating from USSR, joined in 1990 STI Optronics (Bellevue, WA) where was responsible for development of a high-power picosecond CO2 laser and preparations to the Inverse Cherenkov Accelerator (ICA) experiment at the BNL Accelerator Tests Facility (ATF). Since July 93, - in the ATF scientific staff. The main accomplishments since that time:
- Developed and brought to operation picosecond CO2 laser that delivers 100-ps pulses of 10 GW peak power for laser acceleration experiments at the ATF.
- Participated in ICA and Inverse FEL accelerator experiments.
- Principal scientist in development at the ATF of the first terawatt picosecond (TWps) CO2 laser.
Present scientific interests and the most recent publications cover (follow links to get on-line access to publications):
- Development of TWps- CO2 lasers.
- Application of superstrong mid-IR laser beams for laser acceleration (papers #2, #3) and for laser synchrotron sources (paper #4).
- Analysis of prospective applications of the emerging TWps- CO2 laser technology for future linear colliders and gamma sources
Member of Optical Society of America. Author of a number of journal and conference papers, two thirds of which are published after 1990. Member of Program Committee for the International Conference LASERS 97 chairing the symposium Lasers in High Energy Physics.
