Stretching 118 miles from end to end and measuring no more than 20  miles at its widest point, Long Island was aptly named by Dutch  traders who circum-navigated it in the early 1600s. Those early  Dutchmen discovered what the native Indians had known for centuries:  The temperate climate, the bountiful seas and the fertile land made  Long Island a most hospitable home.

Today, Brookhaven National Laboratory sits in the geographical center  of Long Island. To the west, New York City boasts Broadway shows,  museums, international cuisine, and shopping. Eastern Long Island  beckons with spectacular ocean beaches, lovely bays, a burgeoning  wine industry, and picturesque country roads dotted with farm stands. The region is home to leading academic and research institutions, as  well as top health-care centers. Long Island public schools are  highly regarded nationwide, each year dominating the lists of  semifinalists and finalists in the Intel Science Talent Search, the  nation’s most prestigious pre-college science contest. Because of the  Island’s orientation toward high-tech fields, Brookhaven is regarded  as a major resource, both as an employer and as a community asset.

Nearby Stony Brook University (SBU) is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities. SBU offers nationally ranked doctoral programs and is home to many interdisciplinary research centers including the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology, the Advanced Energy Center, and two Centers of Advanced Technology, in Biotechnology and in Sensors. Stony Brook is a partner in managing BNL for the Department of Energy, and is the largest institutional scientific user of BNL facilities. As such, many opportunities exist for collaborative research, and in some cases, joint appointments can be arranged.
