PE143S – Career Coaching for Managers and Supervisors – this one-day course provides an overview of the career management coaching process for managers and supervisors so that they can support staff participation in the career management process. Topics include characteristics of and barriers to effective coaching, effective listening and the five elements of effective career management. This program is presented by The Career Development Team – Bierman House, Inc.

PE146 – Conducting An Effective Selection Interview – this half-day workshop will help both supervisors and managers prepare for conducting a legal and effective selection interview. Topics include defining the key skills, knowledge, education, experience, and other characteristics required to successfully perform a job; developing appropriate questions to obtain this information; reviewing candidate resumes and applications; managing the interview process; and, using questioning techniques to gain additional information.  This course is taught by HR personnel.

PE103S - Effective Supervision - this course for supervisors is designed to provide a thorough understanding of the supervisory role and required leadership skills. Participants gain an understanding of style and how it impacts employee motivation toward work. They practice the communication skills needed for effective supervision and apply those skills to selected situations including: delegation of work, providing performance recognition, and dealing with performance problems. Participants learn to maximize employee productivity and their own effectiveness as supervisors. This course consists of two full-days and is conducted by Carol Rudman of Rudman Associates.

PE150S - Facing the Tough Stuff: A Toolkit for Experienced Supervisors - this one-day workshop is for experienced supervisors and managers.  It begins with examining how one's own style may contribute to difficulties in managing employees.  It then introduces a model that can be applied to various situations such as mediating problems between employees and team members, delegating to reluctant employees, and helping employees cope with change. This course is conducted by Carol Rudman of Rudman Associates. 

PE104S - Goal Planning and Appraising Job Performance -  prepares supervisors to set performance goals, complete the written performance appraisal form, and conduct the goal setting and appraisal discussion with the employee. Supervisors gain an understanding of the appraisal process and acquire the skills to make objective assessments of employee job performance. Participants are provided guidelines for conducting the appraisal discussion in a constructive manner that will motivate employees. Also covered are evaluation pitfalls to avoid and techniques for dealing with employees who respond emotionally to the appraisal discussion.  This one-day course is conducted by Carol Rudman of Rudman Associates. 

PE102S - Interpersonal Managing Skills (IMS) - designed for supervisors, this course provides participants with communication skills that enable them to achieve performance goals and objectives. Participants learn to communicate in a manner to gain the commitment and cooperation of others. Managers learn to increase their understanding of the contributions and concerns of others. They learn how to enable others to change undesirable behavior in a positive manner, how to resolve conflicts, and reinforce and encourage successful performance.  This course is an equivalent course for PE102T - Team Interpersonal Skills.  This one-day course is conducted by Carol Rudman of Rudman Associates. 

PE105S - Intervention - this mandatory three-hour course provides managers and supervisors with the awareness and skills to recognize and deal with the problem of substance abuse as it impacts job performance. This course provides an understanding of the scope of the problem and the cost to organizations and individuals. Participants learn to recognize the work-related symptoms of drug and alcohol abuse and how to make referrals of employees to the Employee Assistance Program. Participants gain an understanding of the Laboratory's drug and alcohol policy and are provided with guidance to take the appropriate disciplinary action when performance problems persist. Supervisors gain the confidence they need to confront performance problems and make early referrals to the EAP. PE105S is an equivalent and will satisfy requirements for PE105 - Substance Abuse in the Workplace.  This course is taught by Nancy Losinno, EAP Manager and Donna Dowling, Labor Relations Manager.

PE119S - Introduction to EEO, Affirmative Action, and Diversity Management - this mandatory three-hour course for supervisors and managers provides information on compliance with Equal Employment Opportunity Laws, Affirmative Action, and Diversity Management. This course also includes practical ways to manage differences in a diverse workforce.  This course is conducted by Shirley Kendall, Diversity Manager. 

PE106S - Labor Relations Seminars - this course is given on an as needed basis for all supervisors to provide information and guidance on selected labor relations issues. Topics covered may include: handling of grievances, absenteeism and the disciplinary process. The seminars are conducted by HR staff including the Director, HR and OM, Labor Relations Manager, and Staff Development personnel.

PE142S - Leading/Managing Technical Professionals - this one and one half-day workshop conducted by Carol Rudman of Rudman Associates helps participants build a solid foundation for managing leadership in a technical environment. Participants will learn how to: pinpoint issues unique to technical professionals; recognize their own underlying assumptions and psychological preferences; understand how to choose the best leadership approach for specific situations; become a world class performance coach; and get action from others over whom they have no direct authority.

PE166S - Legal Issues in Supervision Part I - this one-hour online course covers 12 employee related mistakes managers need to know related to HR practices and federal law.  Topics include Violating Title IIV of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by discriminating on the basis of National origin, Race or Ethnicity, Religion or Gender; Ignoring Complaints; Committing Illegal Age Discrimination; and Violating the ADA, FMLA, NLRA, FLSA and Pregnancy Discrimination Acts.  This course is a prerequisite for PE156S - Legal Issues in Supervision - Part II.

PE156S - Legal Issues in Supervision Part II -  this half-day course will help supervisors become familiar with the major Federal laws regarding employment practices.  They will learn how BNL policies and procedures relate to these laws, what to do when receiving a complaint about work issues related to these policies and laws, and how to avoid employment litigation.  The course begins with a one-hour online introduction to be completed prior to attending the class. A web-based course, PE166S - Legal Issues in Supervision Part I, is a prerequisite and must be completed prior to attending the class. The three-hour classroom session is presented by an internal team from our Legal Office and HROM Division.  

PE-MGRORIENT - Manager Orientation - this purpose of this program is to introduce new Level I and II Managers to the Laboratory's mission, changing themes, strategic challenges, and business management systems.  The Level I and II Managers can be new hires or long-term employees of the Laboratory.  The new manager meets with the Director to discuss the Laboratory's philosophy, history, mission, vision, and the Laboratory's current relationships with its business partners, DOE, Battelle, and USB.  A series of meetings with Directors and ALDs follow.  Each ALD should invite the Department Chairs, Division Managers, and "management system owners" from within their Directorate to the orientation meeting and provide a contact sheet for future reference.  The ALDs then hold a discussion on the functions of the directorate and/or have their managers present short (five minute) overviews.  This format allows opportunity to meet key people and share information and ideas. PE118 - Managing Effective Meetings - designed for those who are responsible for planning results-oriented meetings.  In this half-day training, participants identify the strengths and weaknesses of their communication styles and learn to increase effectiveness as meeting leaders through planned exercises.  This course is conducted by Carol Rudman of Rudman Associates. 

PE101S - New Supervisor Orientation - designed for employees newly promoted or appointed to supervisory positions, this course provides an orientation to Laboratory support functions. In addition, supervisors are informed of their administrative responsibilities in relation to each of these functions. This course is conducted annually and consists of five half-day sessions. 

TQ-SL-SUP - Safety Leadership and the Supervisor - this one-hour web course covers the roles and responsibilities of supervisors at Brookhaven regarding safety management, including the importance of modeling safe behavior and how inappropriate actions on the part of the supervisor can create a more hazardous work environment.  It covers the importance of focusing on workers – not the statistics.  It discusses the importance of training and open communication for imparting the vision of a safe workplace and influencing safe behaviors.  This course also describes techniques for hazard assessment, an overview of accident investigation, and stresses injury prevention through the setting of clear, achievable goals.

PE122S - Salary Review Workshop for Supervisors - through lecture, role-play, and discussions, this program provides supervisors with the knowledge of BNL salary administration, pay for performance philosophy, and the skills they need to conduct appropriate salary reviews with their staff.  This course is taught by Gail O'Hern, Supervisor of Salary Administration.

PE108S - Sexual Harassment Supervisory Awareness - provides managers and supervisors with the definition of sexual harassment, sex discrimination, "quid pro quo" and what constitutes a "hostile work environment". This three-hour seminar overviews BNL Policy, the preventive action managers and supervisors can take to deter sexual harassment, and identifies what managers should do in handling incidents of sexual harassment.

PE108SI - What Supervisors Need to Know About Sexual Harassment - this one-hour web-based training program is offered to satisfy the requirements of both Title VII and BNL Policy for mandatory supervisory education on the subject of Sexual Harassment. In this "cyberspace office", the supervisor must deal with five harassment scenarios. The purpose of this program is to sensitize supervisors to issues and their responsibilities in handling sexual harassment complaints. This training can be taken at any PC. PE108S is an equivalent course to this and will also satisfy the requirements for supervisory education.
