The BNL Transportation Office, located at 20 Brookhaven Avenue, Building 400A, is available to assist BNL employees, guests and visitors with transportation needs in support of Laboratory programs. The hours of operation are 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. To contact the Transportation Office call (631) 344-2535.

Onsite Courtesy Shuttle

The On-site Brookhaven Lab Courtesy Shuttle offers on-call, door-to-door service between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:15 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

Requests are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Be prepared to meet the van at the main entrance of your building. In order for us to be able to serve as many customers as possible, please be ready to board the van before making the call for pickup. Pick-ups can be arranged by calling ext. 2714 and providing your name, telephone extension, location of pickup, location of drop-off and number of passengers.

Note: During inclement weather conditions the On-site Courtesy Shuttle will operate ONLY when the Laboratory is officially open. For more information on the operating status of the Laboratory, please call the BNL General Information line at 344-INFO (4636).

Ronkonkoma Train Station Shuttle

A Laboratory vehicle operates twice daily Monday through Friday with the exception of holidays and when BNL is officially closed to transport visitors and guests of BNL to and from the Ronkonkoma Train Station.

The schedule is as follows:

  • 8:30 AM - Vehicle departs from the rear main entrance of Building 400 on Bell Avenue to the Ronkonkoma Train Station. Vehicle will meet passengers on the 7:39 AM train from New York City/Penn Station arriving at Ronkonkoma at 8:59 AM.
  • Passengers arriving on this train must exit to the north side and wait on street level in front of the Long Island Railroad Ticket Office.
  • This vehicle will only wait ten (10) minutes from the time the train arrives for any passengers going to BNL.
  • 4:00 PM - Vehicle departs from the rear main entrance of Building 400 on Bell Avenue to the Ronkonkoma Train Station.
  • Train departs Ronkonkoma at 4:46 PM, arriving in New York City/Penn Station at 6:08 PM.
  • Due to limited seating, reservations are required for this service. Please call ext. 2535; reserve in person at the Transportation Counter located in Building 400A; or email transportation@bnl.gov.
  • The shuttle departs promptly.
  • The Courtesy Service will only accommodate bags/parcels that fit on the passenger's lap or beneath their seat.

Shopping Shuttle

The Shopping Shuttle is a courtesy shuttle that makes multiple trips between BNL and the Southport Shopping Center. The time and place of the first shuttle pick up on Saturdays and Wednesdays is as follows:

Saturday - Hours: 8:30 a.m. - 12 Noon

  • 8:30 a.m. Fleming House, Bldg. 180
  • 8:35 a.m. Curie House, Bldg. 258
  • 8:45 a.m. Children’s Outdoor Shelter (Lollipop House)
  • 8:50 a.m. Efficiency Apartments 41-42
  • 12:00 Noon Depart Stop & Shop Supermarket for Final Return to BNL.

Wednesday - Hours 5:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

  • 5:00 p.m. Fleming House, Building 180
  • 5:05 p.m. Curie House, Building 258
  • 5:15 p.m. Children’s Outdoor Shelter (Lollipop House)
  • 5:20 p.m. Efficiency Apartments 41-42

Charter Buses for Tours and Special Events

Staff Services maintains a contract that includes drivers for the rental of coaches, school buses, and vans for on-site tours and the transportation of large numbers of employees and visitors off-site. Our contract bus service rates are shown below:

Cancellation Policy: All cancellations must be made by phone to 631-344-2535 only during BNL business hours. Reservation must be canceled ten (10) business days prior to avoid penalty. Cancel two (2) to nine (9) business days prior - $150.00 penalty. Cancel within 24 hours - full fee will be charged.

Requests for tours and special events may be made by completing one of the following Bus Request Forms:

Government Motor Vehicle Pool

The Laboratory maintains a fleet of Government motor vehicles that are available on a short-term basis for official BNL business. Upon request, vehicles may also be assigned to Departments and Divisions.  Requests, with justification of need, are to be made by the Department Chairpersons or Division Managers in a memorandum addressed to the Staff Services Manager. The fleet is administered in accordance with the polices and procedures specified in the Government Vehicle Policy. For more information the Fleet Manager can be reached at x5370.

  • Each Department/Division has a Vehicle Administrator who is responsible for all assigned vehicles.
  • Supervisors are responsible for the safe and proper use of vehicles driven by their subordinates.
  • Drivers must be BNL employees with a valid driver’s license appropriate for the vehicle being operated.
  • Other occupants in the vehicle must be BNL employees or official BNL visitors/guests. Family members are not permitted in Government vehicles.
  • The driver of a Government vehicle must obey applicable state and local traffic laws and is personally liable for the fine assessed for any violation.
  • Vehicle maintenance problems or unsafe conditions must be reported immediately to the Transportation Office at 344-2535. If the office is closed, please leave a message on the voicemail stating the problem.
  • Any mechanical problems with the exception of a major engine/transmission problem should be repaired and submitted for reimbursement with a valid automotive receipt describing the repair and the total cost.
  • In the event of an accident, the driver of a Government vehicle must comply with applicable laws relating to accidents. A BNL accident form (blanks can be found in the glove compartment) along with the official police accident report must be delivered as soon as possible in person to the BNL Police Headquarters. In case of a serious accident off-site or an accident which involves personal injury, the Laboratory Police Headquarters must be notified immediately by telephone at 631-344-2238.
  • An Off-site trip ticket (Form 1369F) completed in duplicate, a valid driver's license and a valid BNL employee ID must be presented to the Transportation Office at time of vehicle pickup. The off-site trip ticket is issued and approved by the appropriate person(s) within the Division that have signature authority.
  • Vehicles are available for One-Half Day and Full Day rentals.

  • Requests for government vehicles greater than 3 days may be made by using the Government Vehicle Request Form. Please contact the Transportation office at ext. 2535 for all other requests.

BSA Vehicles to Assist Onsite Residents

The Laboratory has the use of two BSA vehicles for guests who reside in on-site housing and possess a valid Guest ID number and a valid drivers license. Use of these vehicles is on a first come, first served basis. Due to the limited number of vehicles, and in order to serve as many guests as possible, vehicle use is restricted to the following:

  • Period of use is limited to three (3) consecutive weekends, or Five (5) days and (2) consecutive weekends
  • Vehicle usage is permitted only within Suffolk County.
  • Only the person(s) designated as driver(s) may drive the vehicle.
  • Drivers must be at least 21 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Request for vehicle must be authorized by Department Chair or Division Manager.
  • Requests for BSA vehicles may be made by using the BSA Vehicle Request Form or contacting the Transportation office at ext. 2535.
