ATF's computer control system provides operators with access to virtually all the facility's devices and diagnostics via a state-of-the-art graphic user interface. Through point-and-click window displays, users are presented with various views of the accelerator. These displays permit zooming in from high level overviews of the injection, acceleration, transport and experimental areas, through intermediate level summaries, down to the individual devices located along the beam lines.

Using Vsystem (a commercial software tools package) combined with more than 60,000 lines of code written in-house, over 700 predefined windows have been developed for control, monitoring and data acquisition. Equipment accessible through the system includes magnet power supplies, beam position monitors, video camera signals and switching, timing generators, phase shifters and attenuators, stepping motors, laser joulemeters and analog diagnostics, optics stages, charge ADCs and stripline monitors.

Snapshot and restore utilities are available to record any subset of operating conditions and to reestablish them at a later time.

Other important information is also kept on-line, such as catalogs of facility cabling and location of safety equipment and procedures.

The next few sections of this document illustrate some control system operations and features. These examples do not exhaustively detail all capabilities of the system but present some interesting illustrations that hopefully will give the reader a flavor of how things operate. They will be updated and extended from time to time.
