VISA Experiment (Reported by Lowell Klaisner)

Schedule for the VISA experiment

Week of:

August 30 Complete CMM measurements of undulator sections at SLAC and ship to BNL.

September 6 Set up first sections in magnetic measurements. Nuts for adjusters sent from SLAC to BNL.

September 13 Begin magnetic measurements.

September 20 George Rakowsky and staff will be measuring the NSLS

superconducting wiggler.

September 27 Magnetic Measurements will be completed.

October 4 Assemble, test alignment procedures and pump down the undulator in

the lab. The pop-ins will be complete and installed at this time.

October 11 One week ATF shut down to install and align the undulator on the beam line.

Notes: The jobs listed in the week of October 4 will probably take two weeks and the shut down for installation will need to be postponed to the week of October 18.

ATF Operations (Reported by Xijie Wang)

1. We had VISA beam line safety walk-through, and several items come to our attention.

First is the handling alignment laser, please practice common sense when using them, such as close the shutter when not in use, and warning people who pass by. Second is a power outlet not properly attached to its support. Third is an ion pump support rod coupling which became loose.

2. Clean up ATF computer system: Next Tuesday afternoon, Bob Malone and I will start cleaning up files on the ATF computers, including VAX, frame grabber and Operator PCs. Please e-mail me or Bob on any files you may want to save, otherwise they will be gone.

3. Next week’s tasks are: finish up beam lines 1 and 3, and radiation fault studies for both beam lines 1 and 3.

ATF schedule next week:

1. Tuesday: ATF maintenance, finish remaining work for both beam line 1 and 3.

2. Wednesday: Compton experiment, Physicist: Pogorelsky, Operator Cahill.

Radiation fault studies. 1:30 PM, ATF operator training

3. Thursday: VISA beam line commissioning. Physicist Wang, Operator Montemagno. Radiation fault studies.

4. Friday: Fast Optical Detector experiment, Physicist Semertzidis, Operator Harrington. Have a nice holiday.

Technical Operations (Reported by Bill Cahill)

The following subjects that were discussed at last weeks meeting. Job assignments for the ATF shutdown:

Monday 8/30: Bob Harrington will install the pump-out port for the gun klystron waveguide. (COMPLETED). Don Davis will install the three remaining vacuum pumps above the VISA "flight deck" location.(COMPLETED). Marc to reconfigure the magnet assignments for beamline #1 and reassign GQ1 from 20 amps to 30 amps.(COMPLETED). Bill to remove remaining shielding from STELLA in preparation for Compton installation on Wednesday.(COMPLETED). Check with electricians to pull additional cables for VISA. Pedro will assign type and amount.(Electricians unavailable)

Tuesday 8/31: Bob to remove VISA faraday cup assembly and assist survey group to realign lens. (IN PROGRESS). If time is available, begin Compton screen assembly.(NEAR COMPLETION). The Compton cell should be baking at this point.(INSTALLED ON STI OPTIC TABLE). Marc will continue to checkout low level parameters with Vitaly.(COMPLETE). Vacuum group to start bake of VISA line.(IN PROGRESS).

Wednesday 9/1: Marc to assist Compton electronics problem. Bob to help install screens and install Compton cell at spectrometer location.(IN PROGRESS).

Vitaly to begin beam studies in tunnel if all low level work is complete. (STUDIES IN PROGRESS)

Thursday 9/2: Begin lead shielding for Compton Exp. (SHIELDING IS IN PROGESSS). Check out all electrical systems for ATF. Friday 9/3: Marcus to install new doubling crystal, Bob to assist.

Mechanical Engineering (Reported by John Skaritka)

1. The Beam Line 1 spectrometer’s magnet rail support structure was removed and secured into its storage location.

2. The STI gas cell was replaced with the Compton cell.

3. The beam tube extension and Faraday cup was installed and surveyed into position at the and of beam line 1.The spectrometer dipole centerline was left at 3mm below the surveyed beamline with the approval of Vitaly Yakimenko.

4. Various survey tasks were accomplished on beam line 3. This included the location of survey targets and laser irises needed for the installation of electron beam diagnostics and the VISA experiment. Corrections were made to the Faraday cup VISA light outcoupling mirror.

5. All 4 over head ion pumps required for the VISA experiment have been installed over the extension to beam line 3.

6. The entire beam line 3 has been made ready for bake out.

7. The waveguide pump out port was installed and the waveguide system at the gun’s front end is under bake.
