2004 ATF Newsletters
Greetings to all ATF Update readers,
The purpose of this update is to communicate to you a change in the leadership
of the BNL Accelerator Test Facility (ATF).
I decided to step down from the ATF leadership in order to devote my
full energy to the RHIC electron-cooling project and the associated energy-recovery
linac R&D. I am glad to say that I am passing the helm to a most able,
innovative, enthusiastic and talented scientist, Dr. Vitaly Yakimenko.
He was serving until today as my Deputy; from now on he is the Director
of the ATF.
I consider myself fortunate to have joined the ATF in its very beginning,
September 1988, and having the opportunity to shape it for the past 15
years. It has been an exhilarating journey, with so many happy moments
of scientific discovery and record breaking. I am proud to say that today
the ATF is an internationally known and respected facility for accelerator
physics research and is the object of emulation at other DOE laboratories.
It has cutting-edge internal research program, a strong users' program,
a superb Program Advisory Committee, decent funding and, what is most
important, a talented and dedicated staff to make it work and produce
science. The field of Advanced Accelerator Concepts, which the ATF serves,
also grew and flourished, like the ATF nurtured by the stable support
of the DOE.
My work at the ATF has been highly rewarding and I enjoyed the strong
support of the DOE and BNL directorate, but I decided it is time to move
on.
I am happy to acknowledge a few of the people who helped me and the ATF
on its way. I would like to thank Prof. Claudio Pellegrini who recruited
me to the ATF, Bob Palmer and Sam Krinsky who gave me the responsibility
to lead the ATF and supported it for many years, and the strong support
of the BNL Directorate. The ATF staff and users provided great ideas and
carried out world-class science.
I wish Vitaly and success in his new responsibilities and trust that
the ATF will continue to flourish under his leadership.
Thank you and best regards,
Ilan Ben-Zvi.
