Application Information for ATF Access

  • Applications for ATF access are evaluated by a Steering Committee.
  • The Steering Committee meets annually, typically in the Fall.
  • Applications should be submitted as detailed proposals to:

    Dr. Robert Palmer
    MS 901A, Brookhaven National Laboratory
    Upton, NY 11973-5000 USA

    with a copy to:

    Dr. Ilan Ben-Zvi
    MS 817, Brookhaven National Laboratory
    Upton NY 11973-5000 USA

  • Access to the ATF is granted for a period of one year, with possible extension to additional years subject to approval of the Steering Committee.
  • Experiments are subject to ATF Safety and Operational Review and all applicable Physics safety, health and environmental regulations, including Beam Line Safety Review and Safety Approval Forms.
  • Based on the current load of experiments, beam time for an approved experiment ranges between one to three weeks a year.
  • During running time, operation of the facility is based on an 8 hours per day, five days per week.

Experimenters who wish to run for a longer time (night or weekends), have the following options:

    • Train Experiment Duty Operators out of the experimental team members.
    • Hire an operator. (for details, please contact Vitaly Yakimenko.)
  • The use of the ATF beam time is free for approved users. However, users will be charged for certain Services and Amenities.
  • Additional information on Visiting the BNL Physics / ATF and getting started is available.

Proposal submitted to the Steering Committee shall contain information concerning the following points:

  • The names of the experimenters, their affiliation and designation of a Spokesperson for the experiment.
  • The nature of the problem to be investigated and its scientific or technological impact on accelerator or beam physics.
  • A thorough study of how the experiment is to be done.
  • Estimate of the amount of beam time needed for the experiment.
  • Suggested location on the ATF experimental floor.
  • Discussion of the interference with existing equipment.
  • Needs for equipment and/or manpower from the ATF.
  • Discussion of the ability of the proposing group to carry out the research (including manpower and funding).
