Howard Robinson is a beam line scientist in the
Macromolecular Crystallography Research Resource (PXRR) which provides
facilities and support at the National Synchrotron Light Source for the benefit
of outside and in-house investigators. The PXRR is supported by the
NIH's National Center for Research Resources and the DOE Office of Biological
and Environmental Research in its mission to create optimal facilities and
environments for macromolecular structure determination by synchrotron X-ray
diffraction. With a staff of about 24, the PXRR innovates new access modes
such as FedEx crystallography, builds new facilities, currently on the X25
undulator, advances automation, develops remote participation software,
collaborates with outside groups, teaches novice users, and supports visting
investigators with 7day, 20 hours staff coverage.
Research Interests
High throughput x-ray crystallography: Improvements in data collection at
synchrotron sites, and simplified analysis of structures determined from MAD
data. Bio-structure engineering: Protein mechanical engineering, high
temperature stabilization of proteins, swapping of catalytic assemblies into
new proteins. Cryo-electron microscopy: Techniques for interpretation of low
resolution structures with high resolution derived structural information.
Howard Robinson's group focuses on facilitating access to synchrotrons
for a broad spectrum of Biology and Biotechnology research scientists.
Training is the primary tool used to provide this expanded access,
and this training is a combination of experience at the beamline and
also web-based training tutorials.
The group also provides a
Mail-in X-ray Crystallographic Service
with extremely rapid turn-around time, typically about two weeks.
He carries out his research at several of the PXRR beamlines.
The innovative 'FedEx' synchrotron access mode pioneered by the PXRR group
several years ago was recently highlighted in a
Nature News Feature (Nature 243, 799-800 (2003)) on
'Structural Biology: The crystal's in the mail...'.
