Gregory Fess
General Counsel
All contacts of a legal nature are made through the BNL Legal Office.
This includes service of process (subpoenas), questions on
application and interpretation of local, state and federal laws to
laboratory operations, laboratory contracts and international
agreements, and litigation.
The General Counsel is the principal legal advisor to the Laboratory
Director and staff on matters related to the Department of Energy's
contract with Brookhaven Science Associates for management and
operation of the Brookhaven National Laboratory.
The General Counsel is also an officer of BSA, serving as Secretary of
the company.
Vision
To represent the laboratory and its employees with honesty,
diligence and integrity commensurate with the high scientific
professionalism and worker pride that Brookhaven National Laboratory

Biographical Information
- J.D., Georgetown University Law Center
- At Battelle Memorial Institute, was principal legal advisor to
the nuclear and environmental compliance programs at Pacific
Northwest National Laboratory.
- Provided policy guidance and legal advice on nuclear projects,
next-generation tritium production, and radioactive waste management
and disposal
- Previously, was chief counsel for Battelle's Energy System's
Division, Columbus, Ohio
- Earlier, was chief counsel at DOE's Rocky Flats Plant and senior
counsel in
- DOE's Special Litigation Division in Washington, D.C.
- Member, Long Island Symphony Choral Society (bass/baritone)
- Member, Greater Port Jefferson Arts Council
