General Counsel

Michael GoldmanAll contacts of a legal nature are made through the BNL Legal Office. This includes service of process (subpoenas), questions on application and interpretation of local, state and federal laws to laboratory operations, laboratory contracts and international agreements, and litigation.

The General Counsel is the principal legal advisor to the Laboratory Director and staff on matters related to the Department of Energy's contract with Brookhaven Science Associates for management and operation of the Brookhaven National Laboratory.

The General Counsel is also an officer of BSA, serving as Secretary of the company.

Biographical Information

  • J.D., Columbia University School of Law
  • Worked for several small law firms in Manhattan
  • Served as house counsel for two small public companies
  • Was in private practice before joining Brookhaven Lab in 1977 as Associate Counsel
  • Was promoted to General Attorney in 1982, Laboratory Counsel in 1986, and Deputy General Counsel in 1998
