Brookhaven National Laboratory Plan, 2009 – 2018

Major Activities/Lab Initiatives

Related Opportunities for Growth

Brookhaven has identified several key activities that are not at the level of major, Lab-wide initiatives, but couple well with our core competencies and DOE mission and/or have high impact or growth potential. These activities include:

Biological imaging: Brookhaven researchers have pioneered world-leading advances in the development of detectors, microelectronics, and radiotracers, yielding a better understanding of addiction, obesity, and other diseases.

Detectors for national security: Brookhaven’s advanced expertise in developing and building detectors may lead to new portal and cargo monitoring instrumentation to protect our country, while our understanding of atmospheric tracers can help to determine the dispersion of contaminants into and within buildings, through urban areas, and between countries.

Climate Science: Brookhaven has been a leader in determining the chemistry, physics, and transport of substances in the atmosphere, and in designing specialized instruments to study aerosols and and monitor air quality (ARM) facilities. Work in this area includes 3-D measurements of clouds, which is expected to lead to better climate modeling.
