BGRR Operations: Fast Neutron Chopper

Another view of the fast neutron chopper. Inside the dome-shaped housing is a cylinder which whirls at speeds of several thousand RPMs. Along the outer surface of the cylinder are slits through which neutrons from the reactor pass. When a hole passing the opening in the reactor face is lined up with a hole directly opposite, neutrons emerge through the two narrow slits visible in the end of the cylinder in front. Neutrons are “sorted out” in bursts – a convenient method of studying their energies.
