STATEMENT FROM DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY OFFICIALS
REGARDING BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LABORATORY

Tara O'Toole, Assistant Secretary for Environment, Safety & Health
and Terry Lash, Director, Office of Nuclear Energy

"We have met our February commitment to complete the design and construction of a system that will contain tritium-contaminated groundwater, souh of the High Flux Beam Reactor on the BNL site and assure that concentrations above the drinking water standard will not reach the Laboratoty's southern boundary. This interim system is the result of close coordination and consultation with county, state and federal regulators.

Regulatory officials have asked that we obtain additional information regarding modelling and characterization of the tritium plume before starting the remediation system. We have agreed to take additional time to provide this information.

The regulators play a critical role in assuring that our actions are appropriate and that the contamination poses no threat to the health of the citizens of Long Island. We welcome the opportunity to work with the regulators further."
