At about 9 a.m. today, Bryan E. Schneck, a construction subcontractor with
Bi-County Construction, was killed in an accident here on site. He was struck
by a front-end loader driven by another employee of Bi-County construction
as the two worked on a sewage system upgrade. BNL emergency services personnel
responded to the accident, and found that Mr. Schneck had died from injuries
suffered in the accident. Suffolk County authorities were called to the
scene and are investigating the accident.
On behalf of the Department of Energy and all Brookhaven employees, please
let me extend my sincerest regrets to the family of Mr. Schneck. This was
truly a tragic accident and our thoughts and sympathies are with his family
and friends. Let me also extend my concern to the other employee who was
involved in this incident. I know the deep sense of shock and sadness he
must be feeling now.
DOE firmly believes safety is the No. 1 priority at Brookhaven, and at all
of our operations. Attached is a statement
from Energy Secretary Federico Peña, detailing
the actions the department will take in response to this accident.
