DATE: SATURDAY, MAY 16, 1998
TIME: 9:30 A.M. to 4 P.M.
PLACE: BROOKHAVEN LAB, BERKNER HALL
DETAILS: A total of 109 schools from all across Suffolk County will be represented at the 1998 Elementary School Science Fair sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory. Some 499 science projects, involving 690 children ranging in age from kindergarten through grade 6, have been entered in the fair. ( See the attached list of participating schools.)
Covering a range of topics, the student projects will include experiments, demonstrations, and charts, diagrams or collections with a scientific objective. Here is a sampling of titles: "Hooked on Fishing," "Do Violent Video Games Affect Heart Rate?", "Let's Go Nuts with Nuts," "Invader Crabs," and "Jiggle Freeze."
The projects will be judged by teams of Brookhaven scientists and local elementary school teachers, based on scientific thought, creativity, thoroughness and clarity. Prizes will be awarded, one for each grade level, and honorable mention ribbons will also be given. Banners will be awarded to the schools of the first-place winners.
Members of the news media are invited to attend. Because of space limitations, the Science Fair is not open to the general public.
The schedule for May 16 is as follows:
9:30 to 11:00 a.m. - Students will arrive with their projects and set them up in Berkner Hall.
11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. - Judging. Students and parents will be asked to leave the area.
