SCIENCE TEACHER'S TALENT CULTIVATED AT BROOKHAVEN LAB

(photo to come)

Eric Cohen of Manorville (center) shows off his "Long Island Educator of the Month" award for July 1998, along with Karl Swyler (left), Head of the Office of Educational Programs at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory, and James R. Johnson, Dean of Hofstra University's School for Education and Allied Human Services. Mr. Cohen, ninth-grade earth science teacher and advisor for the science research seminar at Wantagh High School, received a plaque for excellence in teaching from Hofstra University and News 12. He was nominated for the award by fellow educators. During the past five years, Mr. Cohen honed his knowledge of science and technology through the Lab's Teacher Research Associate Program, in which teachers work alongside Brookhaven's scientists on research projects. The program enhances the leadership skills of highly talented teachers and helps them transfer scientific and technical knowledge from the laboratory to the classroom.
