Susan L. K. Briggs, who is project manager for the Environmental Management System at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory, has been elected to a council established by the American National Standards Institute Registrars Accreditation Board. The council manages the Environmental Management System National Accreditation program governing the accreditation of ISO 14001 auditors and trainers. The ISO 14001 standard is the widely accepted official international standard that businesses use to manage their environmental obligations. It was created by the International Organization for Standardization, a worldwide federation of more than 120 member-countries that encourage businesses to comply with strict environmental management standards. Brookhaven is in the process of implementing the ISO 14001 standard. Ms. Briggs joins an 18-member board that oversees the accreditation process for the ISO 14001 program. Ms. Briggs, who earned a B.A. from Harvard University in natural sciences, with a concentration in environmental science and statistics, worked at the Harvard University School of Public Health before joining Brookhaven in 1991. Ms. Briggs is a resident of Massapequa, NY.
