Brookhaven Lab Celebrates
Earth Day With Week of Activities, April 15-22
EVENT: Week-long celebration leading
up to Saturday, April 22, the 30th anniversary of Earth Day. Events
on April 22 will include a four-mile race at 10:00 a.m., a "Fun
Run" for children 12 and under and other activities for youngsters.
Additional events will be held throughout the week (see below).
WHO: The public is invited to participate.
WHERE: Brookhaven National Laboratory
DETAILS: All week long, Brookhaven Lab
will host a series of events to celebrate the 30th anniversary
of Earth Day. All of the events listed below are open to the public,
and the media are also invited to attend. Events include:
Saturday, April 15
- BIRDING FIELD TRIP 12:30 p.m.,
meet van at Berkner Hall
Brookhaven and the Moriches Bay Audubon Society will be hosting
an onsite birding field trip in the Pine Barrens. Teams of seven
people will be led by an experienced birder. An application form

Tuesday, April 18
- POLLUTION PREVENTION TOUR FOR INDUSTRY
9:15-11:30 a.m., meet bus at Berkner Hall at 9:15 a.m.
A tour of pollution prevention technologies in use at Brookhaven
Lab. Local industries have been invited to see digital photography,
centralized degreasing, a printed circuit board lab and machine
coolant recycling processes.
- SIMPLE GREEN DEMO 9:00 a.m.-1:00
p.m., Berkner Hall parking lot
Simple Green, a supplier of environmentally friendly part-washing
products, will bring its "Mobile Environmental Education
Center" to the Lab. The unit is a large trailer that is
a rolling showroom of special cleaning equipment, literature,
product samples and demonstrations.
- ENVIRONMENTAL AWARDS 11:30 a.m.12:00
p.m., Berkner Hall
Laboratory Director John Marburger will present an environmental
award to the Suffolk County grade school student whose artwork
was selected for the cover of Brookhaven's 1999 Site Environmental
Report. Students whose artwork will be used in the body of the
document will also receive awards. Three BNL employees will also
be recognized for environmental excellence.

Robert Pojasek from Pojasek and Associates will give a talk on
"Zero Waste: Possible? Practical?"
- PINE BARRENS SPEAKER 7:30 p.m.,
Berkner Hall
John Turner from the NY State Water Resources Commission will
give an overview talk on the Long Island Pine Barrens.
Thursday, April 20
- SPEAKER ON SHARING ENVIRONMENTAL DATA
WITH THE PUBLIC
12:00-1:00 p.m, Berkner Hall
Jill Engel-Cox will give a talk on the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency's "EMPACT" programs, which give the public access
to environmental monitoring data in a real-time, user-friendly
format.
Saturday, April 22
(Earth Day)
- FOUR MILE RACE pre-registration
from 7:30-9:30 a.m., Berkner Hall; race begins at 10:00 a.m.
Brookhaven Lab, FLIK, Ortho-Sport Physical Therapy, Running Ahead,
Runner's Edge, Second Wind, Super Runners, Teachers Federal Credit
Union and Vytra will co-sponsor a four-mile Earth Day race on
trails in the Pine Barrens on Brookhaven Lab property. The race
is open to all runners. Awards will be presented after the race
at 12:00 p.m. in Berkner Hall. Pre-registration for the race
is required. Entry forms are available at http://www.esh.bnl.gov/esd/earth_run.html.

A 1/2 mile "Fun Run" for children 12 and under. All
participants will be given a tree to plant.

Activities include face painting, a recycling race and pine cone
bird feeder construction.
- - MOUNTAINEERING SLIDE SHOW 1:00
p.m., Berkner Hall
The BERA Mountain and Canoe Club is sponsoring a slide show by
Douglas Zimmerman on an alpine mountaineering trip in Peru.

Floyd Parkway, one-and-a-half miles north of Exit 68 on the Long
Island Expressway.
The U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven
National Laboratory creates and operates major facilities available
to university, industrial and government personnel for basic and
applied research in the physical, biomedical and environmental
sciences, and in selected energy technologies. The Laboratory
is operated by Brookhaven Science Associates, a not-for -profit
research management company, under contract with the U.S. Department
of Energy.
