Brookhaven Lab Hosts Science Students
From Historically Black Colleges & Universities
UPTON, NY —More than 200 science and mathematics students from historically black colleges attended the 60th joint annual meeting of the Beta Kappa Chi Scientific Honor Society, the National Institute of Science, and the Brookhaven Semester Program. Hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory, the four-day symposium at the Melville Marriott was held to stimulate interest among diverse students in careers in science, health and technology.

The students presented their scientific research results in a competition, vying for cash prizes and the attention of graduate schools and potential employers. Volunteers from Brookhaven Lab, Hofstra University, the State University of New York at Farmingdale, Stony Brook University, and Suffolk County Community College judged the students’ papers in numerous areas of science.
The conference participants are pictured at the Brookhaven
Lab site, which they had an opportunity to tour. Brookhaven’s
Interim Director Peter Paul addressed the students, explaining
the multidisciplinary nature of the Lab’s scientific research
and the need for future scientists. The students also had a
question-and-answer session with three Brookhaven physicists.

The
