Holiday Auction at Brookhaven Lab to Benefit United Way of Long Island
EVENT: Holiday auction to benefit United Way of Long Island
WHEN: December 9, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m; December 10, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
WHERE: Berkner Hall, Brookhaven National Laboratory. The Lab is located on William Floyd Parkway, one-and-a-half miles north of Exit 68 of the LI Expressway. (See detailed directions.)
DETAILS: The U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory is holding a holiday auction to benefit the United Way of Long Island. The Laboratory’s goal for this year is to raise $120,000 for the charity, which supports the services and programs of 180 health and human service agencies in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
Last year, the Laboratory raised a total of about $119,000 for the United Way of Long Island, from contributions of employees through voluntary payroll deductions or one-time contributions; from special events, including a 50-50 raffle, a yard sale, and a holiday auction; and a $10,000 contribution from Brookhaven Science Associates, the company that manages the Laboratory. In addition to the auction, a 50-50 raffle and yard sale are also planned this year during the same times, dates and location as the auction.
At the auction, employees purchase $1 chances to win a basket of their choice from over 100 baskets of goods related to a theme, such as gourmet foods, gardening, or health; merchandise such as a television or microwave oven; or gift certificates, such as dinner at a local restaurant. All of the merchandise to be auctioned has been donated by employees and local businesses. The auction drawing takes place on December 10, during the latter part of the event.
The media are invited to attend the auction and photos are encouraged. Because of space limitations, the event is not open to the general public. All visitors age 16 and older must bring a photo ID to be admitted to the Laboratory site.
If you plan to cover the event, call in advance: 631 344-2347.
