Brookhaven Lab’s Holiday Auction Raises Over $11,000 for United Way of LI
Upton, NY – A holiday auction organized by employee-volunteers at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory raised $11,079 for the United Way of Long Island, a charity that supports the services and programs of 180 health and human service agencies in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. In addition, a yard sale of items donated by Brookhaven employees raised $2,118, and a 50/50 raffle raised $1,328 for the charity, bringing the total raised in the two-day events to $14,525.
Last year, the Laboratory raised a total of about $119,000 for the United Way of Long Island, from contributions of employees through voluntary payroll deductions or one-time contributions and from special events, such as a holiday auction. Also, Brookhaven Science Associates, the company that manages the Lab, contributed $10,000. This year, the goal has been raised to $120,000, and the Laboratory is well on its way to reaching it, with contributions of $110,000 so far.
