Ward Melville High School Wins Science Bowl
at Brookhaven Lab

Upton, NY – The team of science whiz kids from Ward Melville High School in East Setauket were the champions of the Regional Science Bowl at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory on January 31.

Sponsored by Brookhaven Science Associates, the fast-paced question-and-answer tournament was designed to test high school students’ knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, astronomy, earth science and general science.

The Regional Science Bowl at Brookhaven Lab, along with 65 others around the country, is part of the National Science Bowl® competition coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Since its inception in 1991, more than 90,000 high school students have participated in this “Jeopardy”-style contest. By competing in Science Bowl contests, students are encouraged to excel in science and math and to pursue careers in those fields.

Eighteen Long Island schools participated in the competition this year. As first-place winners, the Ward Melville High School team received a $500 gift certificate from CompUSA to be shared among the five team-members. Second-place honors went to Half Hollow Hills High School East, who won a $300 gift certificate; and William Floyd High School came in third-place, winning $200. Longwood High School took fourth-place. All four winning teams received trophies. The first-place team will represent the New York metropolitan area and Long Island region in the National Science Bowl®, which will be held in Chevy Chase, Maryland, from April 29 to May 3, 2004.
