Rowe, (631) 344-5056 Five Students Awarded 2004 Battelle-Brookhaven Women in Science AwardsMay 27, 2004 Upton, NY - Five local female high school students who excel in science and/or mathematics were each awarded $1,000 at a ceremony at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory to encourage them to pursue careers in those fields. The annual award was established in 1999 by Battelle, an Ohio-based corporation that partners with Stony Brook University to manage Brookhaven Lab through Brookhaven Science Associates, and by Brookhaven Women in Science (BWIS), a not-for-profit group at Brookhaven Lab whose aim is to promote the advancement of women. The students are (starting second from left) Joan Burger, Longwood High School; Xiao Li Lin, Eastport/South Manor High School; Erica Lukoski, Shoreham-Wading River High School; Samantha Rhind, William Floyd High School; and Kristen Smith, Riverhead High School.
