Albert-László Barabási to Speak at Brookhaven Lab on 'Science Networks,' June 9
Albert-László Barabási, Distinguished Professor at Northeastern University and Director of the University's Center for Network Science, will give a BSA Lecture titled, "Network Science: From the Web to Human Diseases," at Brookhaven Lab on Monday, June 9, at 4 p.m. in Berkner Hall.
Possible Mechanism for Enormous Electromechanical Response
Scientists at Brookhaven and collaborators at Stony Brook University, Johns Hopkins University, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology have discovered that nanosized regions with local polarizations, or "electric dipoles," in a special class of otherwise disordered materials may underlie these materials' extreme electromechanical response to an external electric field or physical deformation.
Northport-East Northport Students Win Two of the Top Prizes at Brookhaven Lab's Elementary School Science Fair
More than 500 science projects from 121 Suffolk County schools were entered in the 2008 Elementary School Science Fair. Brookhaven scientists and local elementary school teachers judged the projects.
Brookhaven Lab's Robert Palmer Elected Member of the National Academy of Sciences
Robert Palmer, a senior physicist and head of the Advanced Accelerator Group at Brookhaven National Laboratory, has been elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences. He is among 72 new members elected this year "in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research."

Project Floyd, a New York based Pink Floyd tribute band, will perform in concert at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Saturday, May 31, at 8 p.m. in Berkner Hall. Sponsored by the BNL Music Club, the concert is open to the public.

Stony Brook Opera will perform a semi-staged preview of two one-act chamber operas -- Dominick Argento's The Boor and Lee Hoiby's The Scarf -- at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at noon in Berkner Hall.
