Career Advancement in a Research Environment

Motivation

Career Advancement in Research Environment (CARE) 2013 is a follow-up of CARE 2012 workshop, offered to early career scientists and engineers at BNL and SBU (including guests and users) in STEM fields. This two-day workshop will develop participants’ skills and reinforce strategies needed for research grant writing. The workshop will allow participants to interact, network, and build relationships with peers, experts and representatives from various funding agencies. How to best match agencies funding interests with institutional research goals will be discussed.

Session Information

The workshop will address general writing skills and subject specific content needed to write an effective research proposal. The program will be divided into two broad categories

General Grant Writing Session: A professional will coach all participants on effective grant writing. This session will provide a comprehensive overview of all key aspects of the submission process. Participants will learn proven techniques for planning, writing, organizing, editing and revising grant proposals.
Subject Specific Grant Writing Session: The session will consist of short presentations on key areas of research at SBU and BNL and a panel discussion on the review process. Participants will then be divided into small groups according to the subject area of their interest. The participants will interact with experts (program managers, project leaders and/or experienced researchers) specific to their area of interest who will provide participants exposure to grants writing and priority research directions in their field.

Special Evening Event

Registered attendees are invited to attend the optional closing banquet dinner after the Workshop on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 6:00 PM at the Three Village Inn.

Participation

Early career STEM scientific and technical staff members are encouraged to register as soon as possible by clicking on the "Registration" tab or "Begin Workshop Registration" button shown above. There is no registration cost to attend this workshop and meals will be provided. Selection of participants for the workshop will be done based on career stage. Preference will be given to candidates who will benefit from grants writing.
