Nanomaterial Safety Symposium

By Bob Sabatini

Safety and research professionals associated with U.S. Department of Energy facilities, including the five Nanoscale Science Research Centers (NSRCs), came together for a training seminar on July 7-9, 2008, titled “Safe Handling of Engineered Nanoscale Materials.” For two-and-a-half days, discussions focused on the management of environmental, worker safety, and worker health concerns in research and development environments. The symposium featured talks by nationally and internationally recognized experts on nanoscale material risks and best practices. It was hosted by Argonne National Laboratory and sponsored by Argonne and the NSRCs.

Vicki Colvin, director the Center for Biological and Environmental Nanotechnology (CBEN) at Rice University, was the keynote speaker. CBEN was one of the first Nanoscience and Engineering Centers funded by the National Science Foundation. One of CBEN's primary areas of interest is the application of nanotechnology to the environment.

Additional topics at the symposium included: toxicology studies, exposure monitoring, best handling practices of nanomaterials, medical surveillance of nano-workers, transportation and waste handling.
