Facilities

The Central Fabrication Services Division's capabilities range from a large Electron Beam Welding facility, to a state of the art cleaning facility, to a large fabricating facility which includes CNC Machining, Automatic Tube Welding, and CNC Punch Press capability. Central Fabrication Services is proud of it's highly proficient technical staff all of which are available, at no cost to the customer, for pre-fabrication design review's and pre-fabrication cost analysis. Over the years we have developed expertise in fabricating scientific equipment ranging from R.F. Cavities to complex ultra high vacuum systems, working with materials that run from Inconel through ___.

The fabrication section is responsible for all estimating and purchasing functions associated with Intra Laboratory Request's (ILR's) for purposes of fabrication and repairs of the majority of scientific type mechanism's utilized by the various Scientific Departments at the Laboratory.  

Division Offices
The Division's Main Office is located in building 479. It houses the Fabrication Section, the Administrative area as well as Clerical Area.

Electron Beam Welding Facility
This facility is located in building 473. The Machine has the capability to weld a variety of dissimilar materials in a high vacuum environment with minimum of distortion.

Machining Center
Okamoto Machining Center with 48" X 120" travel and 10,000 Lb. Table Capacity located in Main Machine Shop at Bldg.479

Machine Shop
The Central Machine Shop facility is located in building 479, and may be accessed by the main door on the north face or front of the building. This is one of three high bay areas utilized by the Machine Shop.

Weld Shop
The Central Weld Shop is located in building 479 in the south portion of the facility and may be accessed by a door on the west side of the building. This building has a Twenty Ton Crane capacity.

Sheet Metal Shop
The Central Sheet Metal Shop is located in building 479. This shop may be accessed by a door on the west side of the building.

Incoming Inspection
The Central Quality Control Facility is located located in 479.

Central Cleaning Facility
This facility is located in building 498, on the West side of building 479. It is a state of the art facility newly commissioned in the spring of 1997. It has the capability of cleaning Stainless Steel, Copper and Aluminum components to very high standards.

Machine Maintenance Section
The Machine Maintenance Facility is located in building 479.

Oil Recycling Facility/Central Coolant Recovery
This facility is located to the west of building 479 immediately in front of building 498. It's purpose is to recycle the Division's cutting oil's and coolant to minimize waste.

Steel Plate Storage Area
We store a wide variety of Steel Plates including Extra Low Carbon Steel Plates. These plates are part of the Laboratories inventory and must be withdrawn through Supply and Material Division. We offer CNC Flamecutting services to cut plates up to 8' X 12' X 11" thick.

Storage Area for Aluminum and Stainless Steel Materials
This area has a number of different shapes and sizes including tubing and round stock. These are left over from various projects and are for the use of the entire Laboratory. However they must not be removed without permission of one of Supervisors located in building 479.

X-Ray Services
Central Shops supplies X-Ray services for Non-Destructive Testing purposes to all BNL facilities. We have two certified Radiographers on staff. These X-Ray services are available either in the field or at our X-Ray facility located in building 479.
