Long Island Landfill Law Enacted

1983

The Long Island Landfill Law was enacted as a result of the Long Island Comprehensive Waste Treatment Management Plan of 1978, which identifed deep flow recharge areas in Nassau and Suffolk Counties where underground aquifers had been designated as "sole source" aquifers.

Landfills operating within the deep recharge areas had to install liners to keep contaminants out of the groundwater or close, and new landfills could only accept clean fill as defined by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
