Suffolk County Inspects Facilities
Under a 1987 agreement with Suffolk County, inspections of BNLs 300-plus buildings began. Two Suffolk County Department of Health Services inspectors were to examine every Laboratory building for compliance with Suffolk County Sanitary Code Articles 6, 7, 10, and 12. The inspectors focused on storage tanks, drum storage areas, air emission points, and connections to the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). On three occasions samples were collected and by December 28, 1988 inspections at approximately 85% of all facilities had been completed. The remaining facilities were to be completed by the of the first quarter of 1989.
Also under the agreement, BNL was to submit plans for construction regulated by Articles 6, 7, 10, and 12 to the County for review. The plans included engineering design drawings for the construction or modification of storage tanks, the upgrading of drum storage areas, and for connections to the STP.
