BNL Placed On Superfund List
During 1988 and 1989, Long Islanders became more concerned about groundwater issues. In January 1989, the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) wrote to President Bush urging him to place BNL on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) National Priorities List (NPL) under the Superfund Program. The Department of Energy had made a similar request in 1987.
On November 21, 1989, BNL was placed on the NPL. The Superfund Program is administered by the EPA under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liabilities Act (CERCLA).
