Central Steam Facility Soil Excavated
Approximately 1,400 tons of oil- and solvent-contaminated soil from a 1977 spill at the Central Steam Facility, Building 610, were removed and disposed of offsite. In November 1997, an air sparging / soil vapor extraction system was installed to treat contaminants remaining in the soil and groundwater. The system operated successfully then was shut down with the permission of the Environmental Protection Agency and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation in 2000. The treatment system was dismantled in 2003.
