Public Water Hookups Offered

Public Water Hookup Area

In late 1995, monitoring data picked up volatile organic compound (VOC) contaminants in private residential wells south of the Laboratory. The Department of Energy provided hookups to public water for more than 1,500 homes and businesses. Investigations eventually traced the contamination to an industrial park north of the neighborhood, however, VOCs from the Lab were found in the groundwater off-site, but at depths much deeper than typical homeowner wells. The contamination was addressed in a comprehensive on-and off-site groundwater cleanup program.

The Suffolk County Water Authority began the hookups to North Shirley residents on January 30, 1996.

The contamination is being addressed with several groundwater treatment systems under Operable Unit III.
