Current Landfill Capped

The Current Landfill occupied about eight acres in the southeast portion of the Laboratory site. It was used for the disposal of general office, laboratory, and construction waste from 1967 to 1990.

During 1995, under Removal Action VI, the Current Landfill was capped with geomembrane fabric and covered with clean soil and seeded. Vents were installed to prevent the buildup of methane gas and monitoring wells were installed down gradient of the landfill to monitor groundwater quality. To ensure the cap remains effective, long-term inspections, cap maintenance, groundwater sampling, and methane gas monitoring programs have been established.
