Trichloroethane Found in Sanitary Lines

April 1997

An investigation of Building 208, in the warehouse area, was initiated after 1.1.1-trichloroethane (TCA) was found in sanitary lines leading into the building during the Site-wide Facilities Review. A vapor degreasing pit was located in the building. Use of the degreaser, which is believed to have been installed by the Army in the 1940s, ceased in 1988. No residual soil contamination was found following a soil gas study and soil sampling. Building 208 was demolished in 2004. The foundation remained until 2008 when it was removed to provide room for the construction of the NSLS II.
