Excavation of Chemical Pits Begins

Excavating Chemical Pits

Excavation of the Chemical/Animal Pits and Glass Holes at the landfill begins. After considering several options, excavation of the contents and disposal offsite was selected as the most protective of public health and the environment. More than 12,000 cubic yards of soil, buried waste and debris is removed from 55 pits for processing and eventually sent to permitted waste facilities for disposal.

The Chemical/Animal Pits were identified as Area of Concern (AOC) 2B and the Glass Holes were identified as AOC 2C. After the excavation, debris from the pits was sorted and packaged, and the soils were stockpiled for later disposal. The cleanup work was completed under Remedial Action VI.
