OU IV Air Sparging/Soil Vapor Treatment System Constructed

November 1997

The Operable Unit IV Air Sparging/Soil Vapor Extraction groundwater treatment system was constructed to address volatile and semi-volatile organic contaminants remaining in soils and groundwater from a 1977 spill at the Central Steam Facility, Bldg. 610.

The system operated successfully. After petitioning the EPA and NYSDEC, BNL shut the system down in 2000 and it was dismantled in 2003.
