HFBR Spent Fuel Pool Pumped Out

Spent fuel pool after being emptied

Following the discovery of a leak, BNL began pumping water out of the spent-fuel pool for the High Flux Beam Reactor (HFBR) on December 18, 1997. Over a two-week period approximately 65,000 gallons of water were transferred via a double-walled underground pipe to double-walled storage tanks. Suffolk County Department of Health Services personnel inspected the piping, tanks, and a leak detection system.
