BSA Assumes Full Responsibility for BNL

March 1998

Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA), a partnership between Battelle and the Research Foundation of State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, assumed full responsibility for the Laboratory on March 1, 1998. Under the new leadership of BSA, an Environmental Management System (EMS) was developed to systematically manage the environmental aspects of Laboratory operations. The EMS is part of the Laboratory's overall management system that includes organizational structure, planning activities, responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes, and resources for developing, implementing, achieving, reviewing, and maintaining BNL's Environmental Stewardship Policy which was first signed November 1998.

In addition, BSA also restructured and elevated the importance of environmental protection and communication functions by creating three new directorates: Community, Education, Government and Public Affairs; Environment, Safety, Health, and Quality; and Environmental Management.
