Suffolk County Task Force Formed

1985

Concerned that tritium, from a release at BNL's Sewage Treatment Plant, might be moving into groundwater both on- and off-site, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services increased routine water sampling at homes near the Laboratory.

The level of concern shown by the community prompted Suffolk County Legislator Gregory Blass to form a task force to investigate BNL's environmental practices.

The Task Force released its report in November 1986. It cited numerous examples of careless waste disposal practices. The report recommended that an independent agency inspect Lab facilities and waste management practicies, and that any deficiencies found be addressed by BNL. Suffolk County, the Department of Energy, and BNL entered into an agreement in 1987 that allowed the Department of Health Services to inspect BNL facilities and take samples. The inspections began in January 1988.
