HFBR Spent Fuel Pool Liner Installation Completed

Installing new liner rim at the spent fuel pool

The installation of a double-walled stainless steel liner into the High Flux Beam Reactors spent fuel pool was completed. The $3.5 million project was deemed necessary by the Department of Energy, despite permanent closure of the reactor, as the pool may be used during the decommissioning process.

The new pool liner consists of two layers of heavy stainless steel plates; a 1/4 inch outer layer, and a 5/8 inch inner layer. Stiffening plates and a leak collection and detection system are located between the two layers. The liner was designed and constructed to bring the spent fuel pool into compliance with Suffolk County's Article 12.
