New Peconic River Cleanup Plan Released for Comment

On- and off-site cleanup areas

Background

An Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA) and Action Memorandum for the removal of Peconic River sediment on the BNL property was released for public comment on September 22, 2003.

This cleanup plan only addressed contaminated sediments downstream of the Sewage Treatment Plant on BNL property. The Proposed Remedial Action Plan, which covered both on and off-site cleanup was released in May 2004, and an Action Memorandum addressing off-site sediments was released in September 2004.

Community Input

During the development of the EE/CA and cleanup plan, ongoing input was received from BNL's Community Advisory Council and the Peconic River Working Group, the EPA, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the Suffolk County Department of Health Services. Additional information sessions, public meetings, and public comment periods were held on the new cleanup plans to give all stakeholders an opportunity to provide input. A 30-day comment period for the EE/CA ran from September 22 through October 21, 2003, and public meetings were held on October 7 and 15, 2003.

In 2004, a comment period on the Proposed Remedial Action Plan ran from May 24 through June 25, 2004. Two information sessions were held on- and off-site in June. The Peconic River Record of Decision was signed on January 24, 2005.
