Waste Concentration Facility USTs Removed

Lifting one of the A/B waste tanks from the underground vault

On September 13, 2004, six out-of-service underground storage tanks (USTs) were removed at the Waste Concentration Facility, Building 811. The six 8,000-gallon stainless steel USTs (Area of Concern 10C), had been used to store Class A and B radioactive liquid waste, were emptied and associated piping and concrete pads were removed. The tanks were cut up, packaged, and transported off-site for disposal. Approximately 4,100 cubic yards of soil, concrete, asphalt, and piping were removed, transported, and disposed of at Envirocare, Utah. The removal of the radiologically and chemically contaminated structures and debris cost approximately $6,457,000. The project was completed on July 11, 2005.
