Major Milestone in BGRR Cleanup Reached
June 2010

DOE Deputy Secretary Daniel Poneman
While visiting BNL on June 1, 2010, DOE Deputy Secretary Daniel Poneman announced that a major milestone in the cleanup of the Brookhaven Graphite Research Reactor (BGRR) had been reached. As a result of $30.5 million in ARRA funding designated for the BGRR decommissioning, the most difficult part of the decommissioning process - safely removing more than 700 tons of radioactive graphite from the core of the reactor - had been accelerated and completed.
During his visit, Deputy Secretary Poneman also announced that BNL would receive an additional $28 million in ARRA funding to complete the legacy cleanup at the site.
