Second Site-wide Five-Year Review Underway
The Department of Energy (DOE) published notice on July 22, 2010 that the second site-wide Five-Year Review for BNL, as required by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) was underway. The review serves to ensure that the implementation and performance of the selected CERCLA cleanup remedies continues to be effective in protecting human health and the environment.
The review will cover all the remediation work performed at the BNL site including:
- remediation of groundwater contamination on and off of BNL property
- excavation and disposal of contaminated soils and river sediments
- removal of above- and below-ground storage tanks
- capping of landfills
- decommissioning activities and long-term surveillance and maintenance at the former BGRR and HFBR reactors
The Five-Year Review will be available to the public in the summer of 2011.
