Environmental and Waste Management Divisions Merge
On March 1, 2003 BNL's Environmental Services Division and the Waste Management Division merged to improve service and reduce expenditures.
The new Environmental & Waste Management Services Division will develop and deliver environmental products and services for all Brookhaven stakeholders. The Division will manage the pollution prevention, groundwater protection, and natural resource management programs. They will provide technical assistance on environmental requirements, maintain BNL's ISO 14001-registered Environmental Management System, prepare environmental permit applications, provide liaison with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies, conduct environmental monitoring,and manage data collected for the Laboratory's environmental surveillance, compliance, and cleanup programs.
Division staff prepares environmental documents such as the Annual Site Environmental Report and also has responsibility for the Long-Term Response Action (LTRA) Program that operates environmental remediation systems, monitors progress toward cleanup goals, and interacts with the Inter-Agency Agreement (IAG) partners to administer the Records of Decision for BNL's cleanup Operable Units and Areas of Concern. The Division also operates the Hazardous Waste Management Facility.
