First "Site Environmental Report" Released

History

Monitoring data has been gathered at Brookhaven National Laboratory since 1949. With the resumption of atmospheric testing of nuclear devices in the latter part of 1961, considerable data had been obtained on fallout levels in the environment. When it was suggested that the data may be of widespread interest beyond the Laboratory, regular reports were planned. The 1962 Environmental Radiation Levels report was first published in May 1963.

Annual Environmental Monitoring Radiation Levels reports continued to 1966 and then began again in 1970. Through the years the report had several names. It became known as the Brookhaven National Laboratory Site Environmental Report or SER in 1989.

In an effort to fill in the gaps in reporting, the environmental data covering the period from 1967 through 1970 was summarized in a report completed in 1998. In 2001 a report was completed that covered the years from 1948 through 1961.

The 12-page report drafted in 1963 has become a 200+-page document that summarizes BNLs environmental data, environmental management performance, compliance with applicable DOE, federal, state, and local regulations, and performance in restoration and surveillance monitoring programs.
