Mark Dean received
his MSci Physics degree from the
University of Nottingham, UK in 2006 and his PhD from the University of
Cambridge, UK in 2010. He then came to Brookhaven as a post-doc working as
part of the
Center for Emergent Superconductivity. In 2012 he was
promoted to be an Assistant Physicist.
Mark studies strongly correlated
materials using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) in the soft x-ray
range. This technique has recently emerged as a powerful way to measure
magnetic and electronic excitations in single crystals, thin films and
heterostructures. A major theme of his current research is measuring the
magnetic excitations in the high temperature cuprate superconductors in
order to determine how the magnetic excitations evolve with chemical doping
and dimensionality.
A popular description of this
experimental technique is available
here.
