Introduction
to the Virtual Cell Model
The "Virtual Cell"
developed at the
University of Connecticut Health Center provides a general system for
numerically testing cell biological mechanisms. It approaches the problem
by associating biochemical and lectrophysiological data describing individual
reactions with experimental microscopic image data describing their
subcellular localizations. Chemical dynamics within and outside the
cell, or on the cell membrane are described by systems of reaction-diffusion
equations. The cell membrane is assumed to be fixed during the computational
time interval. I will try to briefly discuss the components in the physical
infrastructure and the numerical methods used in the chemical dynamics
computation.
