A small RED indicator on the bottom
right of the
OfficeScan Icon
indicates that your version of OfficeScan is outdated. If your computer is connected to the BNL network and your Virus Pattern and/or Scan Engine patterns are not
up to date, try manually updating your antivirus
software. If that still doesn't work, uninstall and re-install OfficeScan.

Although
Virus pattern files should be automatically pushed to your computer system,
in some cases pattern updates may not be updated properly to the client. A
classic case is when machine IP addresses or machine names have been changed
since the last time OfficeScan was installed. In this case uninstalling and
re-installing the OfficeScan software will insure that the client is listed
properly in the OfficeScan Server Database.
There are three ways to view your Pattern & Scan Engine Version:
- You should see a small screen-tip window display your Pattern & Scan
Engine Version if you hover your mouse
over the
OfficeScan Icon
in your task bar, for example: [ Eng/Ptn
8.000/3.181.00 ].

- Open OfficeScan: Right-mouse click on the OfficeScan icon in
your task bar and select the <OfficeScan Main> option. Once open, click
on the <Help> tab and select the <About> option. You should see a window
similar to the one shown below. You will now be able to view your
current Pattern & Scan Engine Version displayed under the "Component Information"
section, for example: [ Engine Version: 8.000.1001, Virus Pattern File
Number: 3.181.00 ].

- Brookhaven users can verify their Office Scan Pattern & Scan
Engine Version by simply referring to the "Latest Pattern"
section located on the right sidebar on the
Trend Micro website. Your Virus Pattern Version and Scan Engine
Version numbers should match.
Manually updating your OfficeScan software:
- Right-mouse click on the OfficeScan icon in your task bar and select
the <Update Now!> option.

- Click the <Update Now...> button.

- Spyware/Grayware
- Grayware is a general classification for applications
that behave in a manner that is annoying or undesirable. Grayware
encompasses spyware, adware, dialers, joke programs, remote access
tools, and any other unwelcome files and programs apart from viruses
that can harm the performance of computers on your network. Grayware is
different from traditional Malware. The main goal of Grayware is not to
destroy computer systems. Most kinds of Grayware have commercial
intentions. In order to achieve their goal, they may modify computer
systems without the owners’ approvals, collect data without the owners’
knowledge, and interfere with how the user normally use their computer.
Spyware is software that installs components on a
computer for the purpose of recording Web surfing habits (primarily for
marketing purposes).
